RockMelt is a new social media web browser(not Flock) based on Google’s open-source project Chromium. RockMelt integrates a unique technique for surfing the web that focuses on Google Search and Social Media, in particular Facebook and Twitter. Currently RockMelt supports Windows and Mac OS X platforms(including iPhone).

The entire browser and the Friend Edge Instant Messaging system have been completely “unified” in this version. What that means is that the browser has been directly integrated with Facebook & all messages, friends’ lists, notifications and requests are dealt as one. If you receive a message, an add friend request, or any other request in Facebook, you will see a notification for that in your RockMelt browser and the most important point is that this wouldn’t be duplicated through the 2 platforms. Ultimately, this means that you won’t have to deal with any extra notifications. In previous versions, the browser used to notify its users when anything interesting used to happen on their profile on Facebook. The users then had to notify both Facebook notifications and Rockmelt notifications separately.

The next feature – the RockMelt Friend Edge – happens to be the most noted feature receiving an overhaul. It is an IM kind of chatting system. It allows the users to scroll through the relevant messages and notifications, change their status (offline/online), hide those friends from displaying that are offline and add selected friends to “favorite” list.

It is not only Facebook that Beta 3 browser can integrate with. The browser also lets its users to integrate with Twitter, several other information and news sites and almost anything with an RSS subscription feed. And as with all other browsers including Firefox and Chrome, RockMelt Beta 3 allows you to install extensions or external applications that can help enhance your browsing experience.  With this browser you have a facility to completely integrate the RSS feeds & subscriptions in a separate section of the window. Thus, there is no any need to get an external feed reading application or program if you are using RockMelt Beta 3 browser.

The Beta 3 browser by Rockmelt also includes an option to share media, web-pages, links directly using the browser window. While logged into any social media site or profile, you can update your status messages, reply to private messages, public posts and chats – all using a unique window menu.

In case you want to go off the radar & turn off every notification then you can even do that with a unique “quiet mode” button. This button is located in the navigation menu. What this unique mode does is that it makes you appear offline to social media networks, instant messaging applications and turns off all associated notifications – all made possible with one press of this button.

As it’s made from the code from Google Chromium project. This makes all ardent Chrome users extremely comfortable with this browser. However, this shouldn’t be misunderstood; the fact that it uses open source code from Google Chromium does not mean that RockMelt functions just like Chrome. The 2 are very much separate entities besides some little similarities that they share.

Since it’s chromium based browser, you can integrate all bookmarks, user data and your favorite webpages into your new browser. Thus, if you were a Google Chrome user, you won’t be losing anything by making a switch to RockMelt Beta 3 browser.
